Summer Solstice inspiring a wintery scene

What should have been a glorious sunny day turns out to be a gloomy and grey one. It makes me think of that other solstice, the winter one: shortest day, longest night. But it's not less inspiring!

Here's a small taste of what the day brought me so far:

-- When Pepto wakes me, it's dark outside. And inside. A faint light comes from the window. Snow has gathered around its edges. The sill is hidden under a thick layer of white. It oozes a feeble greenish light, transforming Pepto into a ghost.
"What time is it?" I push myself half way up and lean against the wall. The mezzanine covers about a quarter of the loft and sits close to the ceiling. Pepto can only just sit up straight without having to bend down or get his hair caught in the splintery roof beam. With the mattresses and down comforter it's cozy like a burrow, up here. --

It's the night of the winter solstice, that I know now. It is what this day of scrawling and crawling brought me. Pepto is Pepto Bismo, a character inspired by Panamarenko's famous Icarus project. My protagonist is Dorian, an adventurous teen.

Walking around Amsterdam today, I passed a Laser 3.14 tag, sprayed on a boarded window. It said: "You're not Icarus. You'll make it." Could it be more encouraging?

  1. what an odd and interesting photo, it's made me cock my head to the left. I like the serendipity you had with Icarus. curious how your story evolves as well!
